How to Get Into Property Management (Without Prior Experience)

1 min readPropertyRoles

Property management is one of the most accessible routes into a stable property career. The entry points, the qualifications that matter, and how to stand out.

Property management is one of the steadier corners of the industry — less commission-driven than sales, with a clear professional ladder. It's also one of the easier places to enter without a property background, if you know where to look.

Realistic entry points

  1. Property administrator or coordinator roles — the most common way in.
  2. Lettings administration, then a move across to managing a portfolio.
  3. Block management assistant roles, which value organisation over sales ability.
  4. Facilities or estates assistant positions for the commercial side.

Qualifications worth having

The IRPM (now part of Propertymark) and ARLA Propertymark qualifications are widely recognised and can be started while you work. They signal commitment and de-risk the hire for an employer taking a chance on someone new to the field.

Employers hiring entry-level property managers care more about organisation, communication and reliability than property knowledge — the technical side is teachable.
